Wedding Flowers: How Many Flowers You Will Need

Posted on: 9 March 2015

When you start planning your wedding, the topic of wedding flowers will soon come up. Many people think about the colors of their wedding or the season when deciding on wedding flowers. However, don't forget all the people and settings that will need flowers. It is easy to forget about the corsages or the centerpieces on the tables. Here is a list of the flowers you may need for your wedding. Remember, you don't have to get all of these, but keep them in mind when choosing your flowers.

Ceremony Flowers

The first category of flowers you will choose are flowers for the ceremony. These are often the first ones you choose when deciding on a theme and color scheme. They can either fit a theme, like orange and black flowers for a Halloween wedding, or go with the season you are getting married, like red poppies and yellow chrysanthemums for a summer or fall wedding. There are a few different places you will need wedding flowers, beginning with the altar or huppah. If you are getting married in a church, you might want them at the end of the pews, or on the backs of chairs for a more casual or outdoor ceremony. During the ceremony, you may also have flowers around candle holders during the ceremony.

Reception Flowers

There will be even more flowers used for the reception. These can be the same collection of flowers you had during the ceremony or different types and colors. There are several places during a reception where you will use flowers, beginning with the table centerpieces. You have a wide range of options for decorating the tables with flowers, including combining with candles, or having flowers in vases in the center of each table. You will also want flowers in the entryway, on food and other buffet tables, as bar decorations, and maybe even to decorate trays that are passed.

Wedding Party Flowers

Finally, you will need a variety of flowers for your wedding party. It is good to start with your bridal bouquet, then design the bouquets for your bridesmaids based off that. Your bouquet will be larger, but some of the flowers in your bouquet will also be in the bridesmaid's bouquets. Other people who might need flowers, in the form of corsages and boutonnieres, include the groom, groomsmen, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, stepmothers if you have them, stepfathers, and father of the groom and father of the bride. It is up to you if you want them for grandparents as well. Also, don't forget about flowers for your hair and flowers for the flower girl. For more information or advice, contact a local florist
